Welcome to John Hovde's Website

When a child of six years old begins to learn how to train horses, that child is destine to become an asset to the equine world. John Hovde is just this person.

Growing up in North Dakota's William County, ranch life, ranch work, and showing animals in 4H, were standards by which the Hovde family lived by. After receiving a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1969 from NDSU, John served his country for 2 years in Vietnam with the 1st Calvary Division. After discharge, John and his wife made their home not far from his childhood home where they raised two children.

Horses are still prominent in John's life as he has stayed closely involved with students and horses by judging numerous high school cutting competitions and local horse shows. This loyalty to his community and horses led John and his wife to host the AQHA State Trail Ride with all proceeds designated to Home On The Range.

Present day finds John holding the position of adjunct professor of animal and range sciences NDSU's Equine Department located in Fargo. John is probably best known in the equine world for his philosophy of "Horsemanship is not teaching a horse, it is learning how to ask the horse to do something in a way the horse can understand".
